Who is a "sub-broker" (currently known as an "authorised person")?

A sub-broker is an intermediary between the member broker (trading member) and clients who extend investment services to investors. The term "authorised person" refers to any person, whether an individual, partnership firm, LLP, or body corporate, who has been authorised by a stockbroker to provide access to the trading platform of a stock exchange in the capacity of an agent such as a broker. Earlier Sub-broker were registered with SEBI, but now SEBI has done away with Sub-broker registration and has started Authorised Person (AP) registration with Exchanges.

Who can become a Sub-broker in India?

Any person who has the minimum qualification of 10+2 can become an “Authorised Person” (formerly known as a Sub-broker) with any of the registered member brokers.

What documents are required to become a Sub-broker/Authorised Person in India?

To become an “Authorised Person” (Sub-broker), a person has to submit basic KYC documents such as..

How much does a Sub-broker (now “Authorised Person”) earn in a month?

Sub-broking is a very rewarding business model and has immense potential for sub-brokers (now AP) to earn in the form of brokerage, which can range anywhere from a few lacs to even crores in a month.

What is the eligibility criteria to become a Sub-broker (Authorised Person)?

Eligibility for becoming a Sub-broker (Authorised Person) differs on type of registration, which are as follows:-
Eligibility Criteria for Individuals:

Should be a citizen of India
Should not be less than 18 years of age
Should have passed at least 10th standard or equivalent examination from an institution recognized by the Government of India
The Authorised Person (Sub-broker) shall also have the necessary infrastructure like adequate office space, equipment and manpower to effectively discharge the activities on behalf of the Trading Member.

Eligibility Criteria for Partnership Firm, LLP or Body Corporate:

All the partners and directors, as the case may be, must comply with the eligibility criteria for Individuals given above
The Object Clause of the Partnership Deed and the Memorandum of Association must contain a clause permitting the person to deal in securities business.

Where should I apply to become an “Authorised Person” (formerly known as Sub-broker)?

You have to approach a stockbroker to become an "Authorised Person." While appointing the "Authorised Person" (AP), the stockbroker needs to obtain the registration of such an AP from the stock exchange with which it is associated.

Are there any fees applicable to become a sub-broker?

Yes. To register yourself as an “Authorised Person” (or a sub-broker), you will have to pay a one-time registration fee to the exchange.

What is a sub-brokers (now “Authorised Person”) primary responsibility?

The primary responsibility of an Authorised Person, erstwhile known as a sub-broker, is to help investors make informed investment decisions that are in line with their financial goals. In addition to this, an Authorised Person also has other key responsibilities such as the following.

Bringing in new clients by marketing the services of the trading member (stockbroker)
Maintaining all the records of the investors associated with the Authorised Person and ensuring that they don’t submit falsified information
Providing investment suggestions, market tips, research reports, and investment calls to investors
Keeping investors informed of the latest offers and promotions through emails and newsletters

Can an Authorised Person delegate their authority to someone else?

No. Only an Authorised Person who has entered into an agreement with the Trading Member (stockbroker) and is registered with the stock exchange can exercise the authority and powers granted to them. This authority or power cannot be delegated to any third party. If found violating the laid out rules, the registration of the Authorised Person may be canceled.

What types of authority can be granted to a sub-broker (Authorised Person)?

An Authorised Person is usually granted the following authorities by the Trading Member (stockbroker).

The authority to function as an agent of the Trading Member
The authority to conduct business development and marketing activities on behalf of the Trading Member
The authority to collect documents from clients (investors) on behalf of the Trading Member
The authority to act as an advisor and to educate the investors concerning the workings of the financial markets
The authority to keep the clients abreast of the latest rules, regulations, stock market tips, and promotions

How does a sub-broker differ from a broker?

A sub-broker, now known as an Authorised Person, is an intermediary between the stockbroker (Trading Member) and the investor. An Authorised Person cannot act independently and can only act as an agent of the Trading Member.
A stockbroker, on the other hand, can function independently and is the entity that appoints an Authorised Person to carry out roles and responsibilities on its behalf.
Additionally, a stockbroker is required to be registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), and the National Stock Exchange (NSE). An Authorised Person, meanwhile, is only required to be registered with the SEBI. They can function even without registering themselves with the stock exchanges.
